Watch your words!

We have all experienced the power of words. They can either lead you to soar or sink. We may be more aware of how others’ words have hurt us and perhaps have been told by our parents growing up to watch our words. The part we may not have been made aware of is how we speak to ourselves and the energy we transmit in our daily words and language.

I have recently come across the work of Mark England who focuses on how your words and language have impact on your actions and behaviour. Language being both internal and external dialogue.

He cites 10 soft key words that we can start eliminating from our language as a place to start. These soft key words are: ‘guess’, ‘like’, ‘maybe’, ‘think’, ‘sort of’/kind of’, ‘probably’, ‘perhaps’, ‘one day’, ‘hope’ and ‘try’.

Can you feel the energy shift when you say “I will try to make time for a workout today” versus “I will make time for a workout today”? One allows escape and does not invite belief in your capability to make it happen – the other brings an energy of clear intention and empowerment.

Christy Whitman who speaks to the 7 Essential Universal Laws (the most popular/ known one being the law of attraction) states that the only thing we have control over is our consciousness: The words we speak, the thoughts we think, the beliefs we hold, the emotions we feel – emotional intelligence – whether we’re expressing or suppressing it. She believes we are containers of what energy we receive and that if you want something (e.g. joy, abundance, freedom) then u need to start trying to cultivate that feeling NOW because then you will attract it. She describes our human habit of assigning our energy away as we focus more on others and forget that we can manifest what we want if we focus more on self.

This would mean that when you feel depleted and tired – instead of reaching for coffee – rest and try to bring in the energy of vitality. Think about the opposite feeling to what you are feeling and invite it in through breathing deeply and inviting it into your cells.

If you feel unsupported – bring in the energy of support and you will then attract this. You always have this divine source of energy.

Words are wands. They create beliefs and perspectives and therefore emotions and actions.

Science on ‘the impact of words’:
  • In their neuroscience experiment, “Do Words Hurt?”, Maria Richter and collaborating scientists proved that negative words release stress and anxiety-inducing hormones in subjects.
  • A further study found increased levels of anxiety in children associated with higher rates of negative self-talk.
  • Dr. Andrew Newberg, a neuroscientist at Thomas Jefferson University, and Mark Robert Waldman, a communications expert state, “a single word has the power to influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress.”
  • According to their research when we hold optimistic or uplifting words in our mind, we stimulate frontal lobe activity – parts of our brain that affect our propensity to take action.
  • Additionally, functions in the parietal lobe start to change, which changes your perception of yourself and the people you interact with.
This month’s challenge:

Write the ten soft key words on post it notes and place them on a mirror, wall or desk that you will see daily – watch how quickly you begin to notice them when they come out of your mouth or others’. You will find yourself speaking with more clarity, intention and confidence.
