I got caught

August 29, 2025by Bronwyn Russo3
I got caught ! And as a psychologist I am partly embarrassed to share this with you (because psychologists can feel pressured to look like we’ve got it all together ALL THE TIME!).

But … honesty matters more than appearances … so here it goes.

On Sunday night, I got caught by the ‘Netflix Next Episode’ hypnosis ! I generally don’t watch a lot of tv or series in the evenings, and rather read a book to be more intentional before I go to bed. However our kids are on school holidays and somehow all the structure and boundaries have gone POOF! I felt like watching something and scrolled on Netflix to see what movie I might tuck into (if any of you watch Netflix – how long does it take to finally stumble on something you actually want to watch!? grrrrr) and came across the new season of ‘Ginny & Georgia’ – a show I have gobbled up previously. “What’s an innocent one or two (max) episodes – it’s Monday tomorrow but I can be disciplined surely!”

Result?

A finger continuously succumbing to the ‘next episode’ button (the “Okay only one more” song) and 3 nights of sleeping past 12am! I am not alone in this right?

I officially feel like I’ve been hit by a bus and can feel the irritability creep in due to fatigue (apologies in advance husband and offspring!).

The first two (or so) days with sleep deprivation I could soldier through but today as I’ve landed on day 5 of my week  – I type this while almost swallowing you up with a yawn as you read this – so stand back!

The reality dawned on me – Sleep Matters! We all know this – sleep hygiene is one of the most basic needs to function optimally.

And yet, even with all my training and awareness, I slipped into the trap of autopilot living—choosing instant gratification over long-term wellbeing. The truth is, conscious living is not about being perfect. It’s about noticing when we’ve drifted, and gently guiding ourselves back into alignment.

So here’s my invitation for you this week: pause and reflect.

Where in your life are you hitting “next episode” on autopilot—whether literally or metaphorically? And what small shift can you make to honour your energy, your body, or your peace of mind?

Because conscious living doesn’t happen in the grand gestures. It happens in the tiny choices, one decision at a time.

🌱 P.S. In case you missed it
One of the places where “autopilot” shows up most powerfully is in our relationships. We react instead of respond, assume instead of connect, and sometimes lose sight of the small choices that build closeness.

That’s why I’m hosting a webinar on:

Ricobewtrwin, interesting name. Gave it a shot and it seems alright. Nothing crazy, but solid enough for a decent time. Maybe give it a whirl if you’re bored. Give it a try: ricobewtrwin
